Signs your phone needs a screen repair

Phone screens usually fail in one of a few recognisable ways. If any of these sound familiar, the display or the glass over it is the likely culprit:

• Visible damage to the glass — cracks, chips or a spiderweb pattern, even when the picture underneath still looks fine. Cracks let in dust and moisture, so they tend to get worse rather than better.
• A black or blank screen while the phone still rings, vibrates or makes sounds. That points to the display rather than the phone being dead.
• Lines, stripes or dark blotches across the picture, or a display that has taken on a strange colour cast.
• Dead zones for touch — part of the screen, often a strip down one side or along the top, stops responding even though the picture looks normal.
• Ghost touch — the phone opens apps or types by itself, which commonly happens after impact or water exposure.
• A screen lifting away from the frame, usually a sign of a swollen battery pushing from inside or a bent housing after a drop.

What the repair involves

1. We look at the phone first The exact model, whether the frame or housing is bent, whether it still powers on, and how much of the touch area still works. A bent frame matters because a new screen will not sit flat in one.
2. We work out which parts the job needs On many handsets the glass, the display panel and the touch layer are bonded into a single assembly; on others they are separate. Which one applies to your phone changes both the price and what we have to order.
3. You get a price and a timeframe to approve We confirm the cost, whether the part is in stock at the shop or needs ordered in, and how long we would need your phone. Nothing goes ahead until you say so.
4. The repair is carried out The old assembly comes off, the frame is cleaned and any old adhesive removed, the new part goes on, and the phone is reassembled and sealed as far as the model allows.
5. Testing before you collect Display and brightness, touch across the whole screen including the edges, front camera and sensor cut-outs, and a test call. We will show you it working before you leave.
